In a recent viral post on social media, users "consterfus" and "suchaflurryflurry" have brought the topic of "toxic maturity" into the spotlight. The image, a screenshot of two satirical posts, highlights the irony and challenges faced by children labeled as "mature for their age" by adults.

The first post by "consterfus" humorously details the exaggerated praise often given to socially withdrawn children. The text reads:

```
Me: *doesn't connect emotionally or socially with my peers*
Adults: πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜Š Look at you!! πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜Š you’re so mature for your age πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ™ Such an old soul!!! πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜Š O h m y g o o d n e s s πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜Š a truly G I F T E D child πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ™
```

The use of multiple emojis, including smiling faces and praying hands, emphasizes the overblown admiration for the child's behavior, which is often a sign of underlying issues rather than true maturity.

In contrast, the second post by "suchaflurryflurry" reflects on the adult consequences of this misplaced praise:

```
Me, now an adult: *has no idea how to navigate social relationships which are needed for things like jobs*
Older adults: Why are you so immature?
```

This post poignantly illustrates the struggle faced by those who were lauded for their "maturity" in childhood but find themselves unequipped to handle adult social relationships.

The comment section further expands on this theme. One user points out, "When you're a child and adults say you're 'Mature for your age' it means 'you don't act in ways that bother adults.' There are a number of reasons for this and many, maybe most, of them are not good. Hypervigilance is one. Parentification is another." Another user shares a personal story, "I was called an old soul, but basically I was fighting for my life against an abusive, drug-using, psychotic stepfather and my evil mother. I wasn't an old soul; I learned how to read rooms and keep count of how many beers my stepfather downed."

Not all comments are in agreement, though. Some users defend the concept of being an old soul, with one stating, "I got called an 'old soul' a lot and I'm pretty good at dealing with people when I want to be. It's hardly 'toxic' to say such a thing." Another user adds, "Disagree 100% this was a huge advantage as a child . . . and continues to be an advantage as an adult."

The debate on toxic maturity highlights the complex nature of childhood development and the lasting impact of adult perceptions. While some view the label of "old soul" as a compliment, others see it as a reflection of deeper issues that need addressing.

Ultimately, the posts by "consterfus" and "suchaflurryflurry" serve as a satirical but thought-provoking commentary on how societal expectations can shape, and sometimes hinder, personal growth. The discussion around toxic maturity is a reminder that true maturity involves understanding and addressing the emotional and social needs of children, rather than simply praising behavior that makes adults' lives easier.

What I do as a 40yo man when I meet another adult: "Hey, do you like video games?" Then without waiting for their answer I pull whatever handheld I have on me that day out of my pocket and proceed to info dump everything I know about it for the next half hour. It works maybe 1 in 10 times so it's a pretty much bullet proof methodology.

I was called an old soul, but basically I was fighting for my life against an abusive, drug using, psychotic stepfather and my evil b**** of a mother. I wasn't an old soul, I learned how to read rooms, pick up on emotions and keep count of how many beers my stepfather downed. 3-4 cans was the trigger for him. Then came the evening's main event.

Every time I've been called immature by someone is always the most irresponsible d****** in the room. Yeah, sure, I play videogames and go to anime conventions, but it's the 7th time in 3 months I have to remind you about paying bills/rent Oswin.
