Volvo has long been celebrated for its commitment to safety and innovation, but one of its most remarkable contributions came in 1959 with the invention of the three-point seatbelt. Unlike many corporations that capitalize on life-saving inventions, Volvo made the patent free for all competitors to use. This act of altruism was driven by a belief that the seatbelt had more value as a universal life-saving tool than a profit-generating product.

The motivational poster that commemorates this significant historical invention captures the essence of this remarkable decision. At the top, the text reads, "When Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959, they made the patent free for all competitors to use in order to save lives because it had more value as a free life-saving tool than something to profit from."

The image is divided into two sections featuring black and white photographs. The photograph on the left shows an older man in a white shirt and tie, sitting in a car. He demonstrates the use of the three-point seatbelt, which stretches diagonally from his shoulder across his torso, down to his waist. This simple yet revolutionary design drastically improved vehicle safety, reducing fatalities and serious injuries in car accidents.

On the right, a woman with short, curly hair, dressed in a light-colored top and skirt, is seated in the driver's seat of a vintage car. She is reaching for the door handle while wearing the three-point seatbelt in the same fashion as the man’s seatbelt in the left image. This imagery underscores the universal applicability and importance of the seatbelt, transcending gender and age.

User reactions to this poster are telling. One comment reads, "After a bad accident, please get a cardioechogram. The seatbelt can still cause chest pressure which can result in an aneurysm. Should it rupture, you get sleepy then you're dead. Lost my Dad to this." This comment highlights the critical role of seatbelts in saving lives, while also pointing out the necessity of thorough medical evaluations post-accident.

Another user linked to an article about Volvo's invention, emphasizing the importance and impact of the decision: "https://www.osteenvolvo.com/volvo-gave-away-their-most-important-invention.htm". This link provides further context and historical background on Volvo's groundbreaking decision.

In a nod to other life-saving innovations, one user remarked, "Jonas Salk approves of this post!" This comment draws a parallel between Volvo's decision to make the seatbelt patent-free and Salk's decision to forgo patenting the polio vaccine, both acts driven by a commitment to the greater good.

The poster and the user comments together paint a picture of how revolutionary and impactful Volvo's decision was. By prioritizing human safety over profit, Volvo set a precedent that resonates to this day. The three-point seatbelt remains a standard feature in vehicles worldwide, a testament to Volvo's visionary approach to automotive safety.

Didn't the guy who invented the polio vaccine sell his patent for one cent? Oh, how we have fallen...

C***** b******s. They could’ve exploited people’s desire to stay alive and made money off it. But instead they gave it away. Despicable

I never get Tesla did something similar with their patents. Or at least I thought to get more BEVs going. Then Musk kind of lost his mind around the end of the 2010's. I feel like EVERYTHING in the US now has to make money and be s***ty. Nothing well made is sought any more for the sake of it just being good. Just: "Let's employ AI to fire more people and then complain we need to be 'lean' by the same inflation we just made worse." As a developer, AI in many of it's uses is a joke.
