The Benefits of Suburban Living for a Happier Lifestyle
Living in the suburbs versus the city is a topic that often sparks debate among individuals seeking the perfect place to call home. While some prefer the hustle and bustle of city life, others find solace in the tranquility of suburban neighborhoods. As someone who has experienced both, I can confidently say that returning to the suburbs has brought me 100% happiness. In this article, we will explore the reasons why suburban living can provide a fulfilling and contented lifestyle.
Suburban Living: Embracing the Open Road and Convenience
One of the biggest advantages of living in the suburbs is the freedom that comes with driving on non-congested roads. As someone whose business requires hauling equipment, having a car is essential. In the city, the constant traffic jams and limited parking spaces can be a major headache. However, in the suburbs, I can easily navigate the roads and find ample parking, making my daily commute a breeze.
Furthermore, lower-income individuals often find it challenging to rely on public transportation due to the sketchy or run-down conditions of bus stops and subway stations. Additionally, the high cost of living near metro stations makes it unaffordable for many. By residing in the suburbs, individuals have the flexibility to own a car and escape the limitations of public transportation, except for vacation travel.
Exploring Beyond the Bubble: Suburban Living and Adventure
During a summer visit to Japan, I experienced the organized, easy-going, and clean subway stations that made exploring rural areas a breeze. I was able to hop on a train, venture into the countryside, and return to my Airbnb quickly and conveniently. However, in many cities, walkable urban neighborhoods are in high demand and, as a result, often come with higher price tags. This limited availability of affordable housing in walkable areas adjacent to train stations and trolley lines has led to the destruction of such neighborhoods to cater to suburban commuters.
Finding the Best of Both Worlds: Proximity and Peace
Living in suburbs that are just a short 10-15 minute drive from the city offers the best of both worlds. It provides easy access to the vibrant city life, with all its entertainment and cultural offerings, while also allowing for the peace and quiet that comes with suburban living. This balance is particularly appealing to individuals who crave the excitement of the city but also value the tranquility and sense of community that the suburbs provide.
The Inconvenience Factor: Suburban Living and Accessibility
While the convenience of living in the suburbs is undeniable, it's important to acknowledge that there can be certain inconveniences as well. For example, living in suburbs that require a 25-minute drive to the grocery store may not be ideal for those seeking instant accessibility. However, it's worth noting that in walkable cities, such as those with well-planned infrastructure, the need for driving on congested roads is significantly reduced as everything is within walking distance, including grocery stores.
The Perception of Walkability: A City's Desirability
The perception of a city's walkability and desirability can vary greatly depending on factors such as crime rates, poverty levels, and overall quality of life. While cities like Baltimore may be considered walkable, the presence of high crime and poverty rates can overshadow the advantages of walkability. On the other hand, cities like Atlanta, which may be less walkable, are often seen as more desirable due to their lower crime rates and higher overall quality of life.
Suburban living offers a unique blend of convenience, peace, and the ability to explore beyond the bubble. While there may be some inconveniences, the benefits of suburban living, such as easy access to non-congested roads, the freedom of owning a car, and the tranquility of suburban neighborhoods, make it an appealing choice for those seeking a happier and fulfilling lifestyle. Ultimately, the perfect blend of city and suburban living is subjective and depends on individual preferences and priorities.
