Pennsylvania, for example, is home to the Marcellus Shale, the second-largest known natural gas deposit globally. Hydraulic fracturing extends the life of oil wells, producing additional oil and gas and potentially lowering energy prices. This economic benefit is crucial as it helps stabilize energy costs and supports local economies. Fracking's impact on drinking water is another critical concern. The chemicals used in the process can render surrounding community drinking water undrinkable. In some cases, the contamination is so severe that the water becomes flammable. This pollution not only affects human health but also the environment, leading to long-term ecological damage.

Fracking is a highly divisive issue, particularly in regions with substantial natural gas reserves. In Pennsylvania, the industry's influence is evident in political endorsements and campaigns. The debate around fracking often centers on its environmental impact and the need for a transition plan to renewable energy.

While fracking continues to produce additional oil and gas, lowering prices and creating jobs, its environmental drawbacks cannot be ignored. The release of methane and contamination of drinking water are significant concerns that need to be addressed.
As the global community moves towards renewable energy sources, the role of fracking in the energy transition will remain a critical topic of discussion. Policymakers must weigh the economic benefits against the environmental risks to develop a sustainable energy strategy.
