In a viral Reddit video titled "Inflation is getting crazy," viewers are treated to an unexpected revelation about the state of potato chip packaging today. The video, which has sparked significant online discussion, showcases a seemingly over-inflated bag of chips that has left many users both amused and frustrated.

One user humorously pointed out the product details with a comment saying, "$7.99. Low calorie. Zero sugar. No preservatives. Part of a healthy diet. Heart health ❤️." This comment highlights the marketing buzzwords often used to sell such products, despite the disappointing reality of the packaging.

Another user quipped, "That bag is inflated alright," capturing the essence of the entire video. The frustration was echoed by someone who shared their personal experience with the issue: "I have an unopened bag of Lays in my desk that is nothing but air. I want to show people but worried they would open it."

Interestingly, an insider perspective was provided by a former employee of Kettle, a brand under Campbell's. This user mentioned, "They did go through 4 separate 'downweighting,' which is what they called it. I was there at Kettle when they did it. Kept the price the same and reduced package size specifications." This insight reveals the industry's strategy of maintaining prices while reducing the content, commonly known as shrinkflation.

The video and ensuing discussion also highlighted the protective purpose of the air in chip bags. One user defended the practice by explaining, "The extra air in the bag is to protect them from breaking, it’s not to mislead you. That’s why they are sold by weight and the weight is listed right on the package."

However, not all reactions were negative. Some comments added a humorous touch to the situation. For instance, "Air that might smell like chips. Awesome," and "schrödingers crisp" provided comic relief amidst the complaints.

Ultimately, this viral video has brought to light a common frustration among consumers: the increasing amount of air in chip bags. As one user aptly put it, "Literal inflation of the bag," summarizing the general sentiment.

For anyone curious about the current state of snack packaging and the industry's response to inflation, this Reddit video and the lively discussion it sparked are a must-watch.

I mean.....they did go through 4 separate "downwieghting," which is what they called it. I was there at kettle when they did it. Kept the price the same and reduced package size specifications. Was a pain in the a** to update our spec sheets so frequently. Now, they can't sell as much as they produce, and the warehouses are filling up. Kettle is part of Campbell's, a company well known for reducing the quality while keeping the price the same. As a side note, almost all the kettle products have MORE fat than lays or other brands at 30-32%.
