Indeed.com: The Job-Hunting Giant That Fails Job Seekers

Indeed.com is renowned as the largest job-hunting website, but it often leaves job seekers frustrated with its inefficiencies. A recent collage of Tumblr posts highlights the daily struggles faced by users on this platform, sparking widespread discussion and criticism.

In one post, a user named "beaft" expresses astonishment at how Indeed.com, despite being the biggest job-hunting website, manages to be profoundly useless. The user recounts multiple attempts to find suitable jobs, only to be met with irrelevant listings such as "military intelligence officer," "senior veterinary surgeon," and "forklift engineer" when searching for entry-level positions. Even more bewildering, a search for "jobs in bookselling" yields mostly care assistant roles and one pyramid scheme.

Another user, "moki-dokie," shares similar frustrations. They emphasize the mismatch between their profile and the job recommendations they receive, which often require degrees and experience they do not possess. This sentiment resonates with many others who have faced similar issues on Indeed.com.

The comments section reveals a broader dissatisfaction with the job-hunting process. One user notes that Indeed.com spends millions promoting itself as the largest site, driving traffic and enabling it to sell based on these metrics. However, this popularity does not translate to effectiveness. Another comment highlights how recruiting agencies also fall short, with recruiters contacting job seekers for positions that do not match their qualifications or location preferences.

Users also point out the prevalence of "ghost jobs"—listings that appear to exist only to manipulate job market statistics. This tactic can mislead both job seekers and the Department of Labor, painting a false picture of job availability and economic health.

For those seeking better results, one commenter advises applying directly through company websites rather than relying on Indeed.com. Another shares a personal anecdote about their daughter applying to a local fast food restaurant, only to be left in limbo despite being offered a job.

Indeed.com is not the only platform under fire. LinkedIn and other job-hunting sites also face criticism for similar shortcomings. One user shares their experience of applying for numerous positions through these platforms, only to receive no responses or rejections.

A recurring theme in the comments is the frustration with fake job postings and misleading offers. Some users have encountered companies that post jobs under different names to gather resumes, only to use the information for telemarketing purposes.

Despite these challenges, some users have found success with traditional recruiters who handle the legwork. However, the general consensus remains that Indeed.com and similar platforms need significant improvements to better serve job seekers.

While Indeed.com may be the largest job-hunting website, it is far from the most effective. Job seekers continue to struggle with irrelevant listings, ghost jobs, and misleading offers. The need for better job-hunting solutions is evident, as users seek more reliable and accurate platforms to aid their employment search.

As someone who has used Indeed to hire. It's equally useless to people that are ACTUALLY looking for employees.

haha thank you for posting. I enjoyed it. I prefer indeed over monster or LI but they are a mess, remote/hybrid is full of lies too. -> note

It's not just indeed, it's recruiting agencies too. I get repeatedly contacted by recruiters via email, text, and phone that want me to move across country for a field that I am not licensed for and show zero experience on my resume.

It's the largest site because they spend millions telling everyone it's the largest site and so people go there first which gives them traffic and lets them sell based on how much traffic they have.

LinkedIn and Indeed are complete f***ing garbage. They (and a couple others) have destroyed the job hunting/recruiting process.

I’ve been wondering if these ghost jobs are also to fool the department of labor and screw over job market statistics. “Look at all these openings we have! The economy is fine! Please drop interest rates and stop discussing taxes to support the unemployed! Everything is fine! Trust us!” But consider what half a century of trusting corporate America has resulted in.

If you see a company posted on indeed and they have a website with a careers section I would recommend applying directly there.

My daughter applied to a fast food restaurant a block from the house. She got an interview and was offered a job. After a few days she made multiple attempts to contact them as to when they’d want her to start and she received no reply.

I put in full time job, WFH, +100.000 salary in my requirements. I get an email about offering a 4 months contract job to 15 bucks an hour, and requiring me to be physical on locations. I even have someone call me, with a c*** offer, and I asked them if they have read my requirements "well we thougt it was a good opportunity..." its not if it does not meet my requirements...
