Good morning, everyone! A recent video titled "This Should Be Mandatory" has sparked a flurry of reactions and conversations online. The video features a meeting where the speaker opens with a stark reminder of our mortality, stating, "In a hundred years, I'll be dead. And you'll be dead, and all memory of us will be gone." This existential perspective sets the tone for a discussion that challenges the importance of everyday workplace matters.

The video, accompanied by the soothing background music "Hang On Little Tomato" by Pink Martini, has resonated with many viewers who relate to the commonplace frustration of workplace meetings. One commenter summarized a common sentiment: "I mostly get called into meetings to make decisions about things affecting the team. I push for sanity and getting the job done. Then later I find out someone a couple pay grades above me reversed it all stupidly and I have to implement idiocy."

However, reactions varied widely. Some users appreciated the existential reminder, with one saying, "We all die at the end. Been using this for perspective for years. Really helps quell the intensity of certain things." Others pointed out that the approach wouldn’t be suitable for all professions, noting, "Totally different video if the meeting is for the staff of an ER on a Friday night."

While the video's speaker aimed to reduce the perceived gravity of workplace issues, not everyone agreed. One viewer commented, "So because it's not going to impact the world for millennia to come, it's not important? What about the people it impacts right here, right now?" Another viewer humorously remarked on the speaker's style, saying, "Ugh. Is he gonna make big slow speeches like this throughout the meeting?"

The video also touched a nerve with those who have experienced corporate environments. A user shared, "I spent years temping in Corporate Admin Jobs, I used to get lots of job offers but after temping in the company there was no way in the world would I ever work for them."

The video's impact extends beyond just the corporate world. It serves as a reminder to take a step back and consider the broader picture, without discounting the immediate effects our actions have. As one commenter wisely put it, "Since we’re all ultimately here to pay our rent/mortgages, let’s all just be kind to one another and get this done, thanks.”

In a world where the daily grind often takes precedence, this video's existential approach to meetings may not be practical for everyone, but it certainly provides food for thought. Whether you find it inspiring or impractical, "This Should Be Mandatory" has undoubtedly made an impression, prompting discussions about the importance and impact of our daily tasks.

While I appreciate and agree with this, if I tried this in my meetings I'd be reprimanded 1st then probably fired

I spent years temping in Corporate Admin Jobs, I used to get lots of job offers but after temping in the company there was no way in the world would I ever work for them. I was temping for a Not for Profit anglican caring organisation and I was offered a position and if I wasn't an Atheist I would certainly have taken it. When they had meetings a member of the staff present was chosen to say a prayer, usually 5 mins long. I was always petrified they might choose me.

Yea we get it Kyle you’re having an existential week. But I’m here to do the things on my employment contract so i can afford to give my family a comfortable life. So s***, announce that you missed another deadline and let’s get on with the meeting…

This really depends on your job. Plenty of people really do make decisions where people's lives are in the balance: doctors, police, social workers, fire & rescue, and unfortunately politicians.
