Former President Trump Calls for House Republicans to Impeach President Biden

Former President Trump has publicly and privately called for House Republicans to impeach President Biden. Trump suggested that this push for impeachment may be a tit-for-tat response to his own impeachment. Speaker Kevin McCarthy has directed House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into Biden. However, the House Oversight Committee has not found evidence that President Biden directly financially benefited from his son's business dealings or made policy decisions because of them. Trump has expressed his desire for House Republicans to impeach Biden on social media and has even dined with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has advocated for impeaching Biden. Trump also spoke with Rep. Elise Stefanik, the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, after McCarthy announced plans for an impeachment inquiry. Democrats argue that House Republicans' impeachment inquiry into Biden is motivated by politics and revenge. It is important to note that Trump is the front-runner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Trump was impeached twice during his four years in office, with the first impeachment in 2019 regarding his attempts to pressure Ukrainian leadership to investigate the Biden family and the second impeachment coming in 2021 after the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol. The former president's first impeachment is factoring into the discourse over how Republicans are handling their inquiry into Biden. Republicans in 2019 criticized Democrats for opening an impeachment inquiry without a full House vote, but the Trump Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel issued an opinion stating that a committee must be authorized by the House for an impeachment investigation to be valid. Democrats are ridiculing Republicans and accusing McCarthy of hypocrisy for not authorizing the impeachment inquiry with a full House vote. House Republicans are moving forward with an impeachment inquiry against Biden, reflecting a new era of politics where impeachment is used as a tool of retribution.
